DeLand, Fla. - The weather provided a stiff challenge on Saturday at Lake Beresford for the 2011 Hatter Classic, but all the crews for Stetson rowing showed great poise and raced hard through the choppy waters.

With overcast skies and a heavy chop, the women's eights raced first. Stetson's lightweight crew – led by coxswain Kerry Burke, and including Caitlin Burke, Caitlin Mooney, Christina Kapusta, Callie Peacock, Christine Vogelgesang, Nicky Cabellero, Amanda Ponce and Jacqueline Horbert – nearly clipped Florida Tech's open-weights.

In such a strong headwind, open weights own a distinct advantage over lightweight crews. Stetson's lightweight women showed they have the potential to fare well this year.

The Stetson men's crew swept their pair of events. The men's open four of Captain Bill Brady, Taylor Heatherington, Gary Mara, and Mike Sigrist with Erin Lee at coxswain, finished nearly four minutes ahead of Embry Riddle's crew.

UCF swept the novice women's events for the eights. In the fours, Stetson's Ponce, Cabellero, Priscilla White and Bria Parrish, with Maddie Briggs at coxswain, took silver.

The women's open four event also produced a strong win for Stetson.  Coxswain Kerry Burke, with a crew of Delai Hanna, Christy Ruane, Shay Martin and Peaccok turned in a very fast run against a strong FIT boat.

There were about 200 fans in attendance for the Hatter Classic which saw nearly 100 athletes compete. The Stetson Crew will return to action next at the Head of the South in Augusta Ga., on Friday, November 11.
