The Stetson varsity women's lightweight 4+ and men's open 2- rowing teams each raced on Friday, May 10 at the 75th Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa.
The women's 4+ squad finished fifth in its heat with a time of 8:34, while the men's open 2- finished fourth in its heat with a time of 7:30. Neither squad was able to advance to the semifinals.
"We all knew the race to get into the finals was going to be tough for both boats and I am happy that both boats raced and pushed other teams," Stetson head coach Mark Wilson said. "The Women’s 4+ raced against the event winner in the heat and was simply over powered by a very talented and fast Brock University Crew. They knew that this was going to be a tough race but they came out of the weekend with their heads held high and ready to train and prepare themselves for the 2013-14 season."
The Men’s Open 2- was also pumped to race and came off the stake boat primed but their rate was a little low, knowing they had some big teams in their heat. The pair of David Nutting and Michael Sigrist was looking good but the headwind took its toll on the team. The bigger crews from Michigan, Clarkson and Rochester finished ahead of the Hatters, but Stetson beat Philadelphia University for fourth place. Only the top three from the heat moved on to the semifinals. Both Clarkson and Rochester went on to the finals so the Hatters know they raced the fastest crews in the heats.
The entire Hatter team is now on summer break and many members are heading home to row for summer clubs and are doing summer training to get into great shape for the start of the Fall 2013 season.
