DeLand, Fla. - Stetson athletics director Jeff Altier has announced that John Boyle is stepping down as head coach of the cross country program effective July 1, 2010.

"John has been a member of the Stetson team for 17 years. He brought to Stetson, and the students involved in the cross country program a lifetime of running experience", said Altier. "By example, and through his participation John taught a generation of Stetson students how to love running and make it part of their daily routine. He will certainly be missed and we wish him well."

Boyle has led the men's and women's cross country programs since being appointed head coach on August 12, 1993. A devoted runner, he is one of Florida's top runners in the 65-and-over age group. He is president of Alta Vista Sports and previously served as head cross country coach at DeLand High School, earning Five Star Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors in 1986.

He is retiring from coaching so that he can better focus on Alta Vista, his race timing business, as well as the new developments in the field that are taking up more and more of his time.

"It's with a variety of emotions that I feel the necessity to resign from the position of head cross country coach at Stetson. It has been a privilege to have been a small part in the college careers and lives
of a group of fine young people", said Boyle. "Both Joe Guthrie [assistant coach] and I are proud of having steered some of the finest scholar-athletes towards Stetson and having made their lives a little more interesting while here."

Over the years Boyle has served the running sports as the National Chairperson for Masters Long Distance Running for USA Track and Field (USATF), as well as on that organization's Board of Directors. He has also been the Florida State Representative for the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) and National Duathlon Chair for USA Triathlon (USAT). Boyle is a successful competitive runner, having several Florida Masters Championships, and a National Masters 10K Championship. He has participated in numerous Boston Marathons.
