When running through the forest, you never know what's around the next bend. That, in short, pretty much sums up Stetson's 2010 cross country season.
In mid-summer, John Boyle surprised everyone when he suddenly announced his retirement after 17 years as head coach. Almost as soon as Mallory Dunn--his personal choice as a successor--was introduced as his replacement, a wave of excitement swept over the program. With her, she brought years of personal running success, a fresh and enthusiastic approach to training, and a knowledgeable and energetic assistant coach in Joe Matusczak.
Led by team captains Kyle Burton and Kelsey Munson, and inspired by front runners and team MVPs Maria Harper and freshman G. Andrew Epifanio, personal best times fell by the bucketful. No sooner had the season ended than talk turned to extending their training, running area road races, and starting a track club.
"We enjoyed a successful season of running, racing, and sharing the joys of camaraderie," siad Coach Dunn. "Each scholar-athlete proved a unique addition to the team, and will no doubt continue to guide and elevate our team, both during off-season training, and in seasons to come. The men peaked at the conference meet, showing that they were capable of great performances. The women's team worked hard to establish a strong base, consistently exhibited mental toughness, and steadily improved with each race. We look forward to continuing our success in 2011."
