Jacksonville, Fla. - The Stetson men's and women's cross country teams opened their seasons on Friday at the JU Short Course Duals, competing against host Jacksonville as well as Bethune-Cookman and Savannah State. The Stetson men went 2-1 and the women were 1-2 in the event.
Dual wins were determined by the total finish of each team's top five runners in a single race relative to each other. The best possible score was 15 points (1-2-3-4-5). The Stetson men picked up victories over B-CU (27-28) and JU (20-35) and narrowly fell 27-29 to Savannah State. Sophomore Andrew Epifanio (DeLand, Fla.) led the Hatters with a sixth place overall finish in the race in 17:16.24. Junior Kyle Burton (Oviedo, Fla.) finished ninth in 17:50.59 with freshman Jeremy Butler (Mims, Fla.) and junior Brian Dughi (Jacksonville, Fla.) taking 11th and 13th, respectively.
For the Stetson women the top overall finisher was sophomore Sabrina Guzsvany (Port Orange, Fla.) in 15th place with a time of 15:00.25 for 3300 meters. Junior Alyssa Thompson (Mims, Fla.) placed 18th. The Hatters defeated Bethune-Cookman 20-43 while losing to Jacksonville (15-50) and Savannah State (19-36).
Today's meet marked the debut of new Stetson cross country head coach Joe Matuszczak. The Hatters will next run at the Florida Tech Invitational next Saturday, September 10 in Melbourne, Fla.
