DeLand, Fla. - Junior shortstop Chelsey Trotto (Lantana, Fla.) and freshman pitcher Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.) each hit two-run home runs, but the power display was not enough to bring the Stetson softball team (6-8) a victory on Sunday in a 9-4 loss to Charleston Southern to close out the Hatter Classic at Patricia Wilson Field. Owen's home run was not only the first of her career but also her first collegiate base hit.
Trotto's two-run homer in the third, which followed a leadoff single from freshman center fielder Chrissy Morello (Ormond Beach, Fla.) erased an early 1-0 deficit and gave the Hatters their only lead of the ballgame at 2-1. It was the second home run in as many days for Trotto and her second of the season. CSU third baseman Kelly Brock delivered a two-out two-run single in the bottom of the third (Stetson played as the visiting team) to put the Buccaneers back up 3-2; five runs in the bottom of the fifth on five hits and two Hatter errors put the game out of reach.
Trailing 9-2 in the seventh inning, sophomore second baseman Alyssa Oddo (Covina, Calif.) led off with an infield single and immediately got to trot home when Owen blasted a Kimberly Hobbs pitch into the last row of the left field bleachers, making it a 9-4 ballgame. Hobbs would not falter, however, retiring the next three batters to end the game without further damage.
Brock finished two for four with three RBI and two runs scored to lead CSU to the win; Hobbs had two strikeouts in her complete game victory. Sophomore starting pitcher Camille Czarnecki (Edmonton, Alta.) was charged with the loss for Stetson while Trotto recorded her eighth stolen base of the season.
The Hatters return to action Friday, beginning the three-day Stetson Invitational at Patricia Wilson Field at 4 p.m. against Tennessee State and continuing with a 6:30 p.m. game vs. Binghamton. Elon is also in the field; Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at GoHatters.com.
