DeLand, Fla. - Junior shortstop Chelsey Trotto (Lantana, Fla.) and senior third baseman Jill Semento (Umatilla, Fla.) drove in the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Stetson softball team (14-11) rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat visiting Jackson State 6-5 (6-15) in the finale of the Stetson Classic on Sunday at Patricia Wilson Field. Freshman pitcher Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.) tossed four and a third innings of no-hit relief to earn her fifth win of the year.
Jackson State grabbed the early momentum with single runs in the first and second and a three-run outburst in the third to take a 5-0 lead after two and a half frames. A wild pitch, a passed ball and an error led directly to three of those runs scoring, but once Owen entered the ballgame, she completely silenced the Lady Tigers. JSU's first batter against her in the top of the third reached on an error, but Owen then retired the last 13 Jackson State hitters in a row with three strikeouts.
The Hatters started their rally with two runs in the bottom of the third as Semento collected an RBI fielder's choice; a JSU throwing error on the play resulted in a second run scoring to make it 5-2. More shaky fielding brought in the third run in the fourth as sophomore second baseman Alyssa Oddo (Covina, Calif.) led off with a double and eventually scored on a bobbled ground ball that would have ended the inning.
Stetson's final push in the bottom of the sixth started with two out and a runner on second. Freshman center fielder Chrissy Morello (Ormond Beach, Fla.) worked a walk from Jackson State pitcher Breea Jamerson, putting the tying runs on base for Trotto, who smashed Jamerson's first pitch into the left center field gap. That shot plated Morello and sophomore catcher Jordan Cleghorn (Ball Ground, Ga.) to tie the game 5-5. Semento then stepped to the plate and drove a hard grounder back through the middle to score Trotto and give the Hatters a 6-5 lead.
Owen needed just five pitches in the top of the seventh to slam the door on Jackson State; the Hatters defeated JSU three times this weekend, scoring 22 runs in the process. Trotto had two hits and tied for the team lead with her fifth double of the season while Morello continued her hunt for the Atlantic Sun Conference stolen bases lead with her 15th swiped bag of the season.
