DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson softball team (14-13) fell victim to its opponent's final turn at bat twice on Tuesday in the Stetson Hatter Roundup at Patricia Wilson Field, falling 3-2 to Iowa and 2-1 in eight innings to Colgate. Sophomore second baseman Alyssa Oddo (Covina, Calif.) had two doubles and an RBI on the day.
IOWA 3, STETSON 2
Hawkeyes pitcher Chelsea Lyon held Stetson scoreless until the fifth and center fielder Ashley Akers pushed across a run in the third on an RBI groundout to give Iowa a 1-0 lead. With junior left fielder Brittany Knipp (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) on third with one out in the bottom of the fifth, a collision on a rundown allowed Knipp to score the tying run. One batter later, senior designated player Katelyn Perna (St. Petersburg, Fla.) collected an RBI single that scored junior shortstop Chelsey Trotto (Lantana, Fla.) to give Stetson the lead.
The Hatters appeared to have matters under control with two out in the seventh, but with two runners in scoring position, a Stetson error allowed the tying run to score. The next batter, third baseman Michelle Zoeller, drove an RBI single through the infield to give Iowa a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish in the home half of the seventh.
Trotto was the only player in the game to finish with two hits. Lyon struck out six to earn the win for Iowa while sophomore Camille Czarnecki (Edmonton, Alta.) was the hard-luck loser for Stetson with just one earned run allowed in seven innings and two strikeouts.
COLGATE 2, STETSON 1 (8 INNINGS)
Colgate's Rachel LeCoq got the best of Stetson freshman Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.) in an excellently pitched ballgame by both that needed extra innings to resolve. LeCoq struck out eight, scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run while Owen fanned five, let up only six hits and one earned run for her part.
The Raiders took a 1-0 lead on designated player Jennifer Martin's RBI single with one out in the top of the fifth, but the Hatters would draw level when Oddo doubled into the left center field gap with two gone in the sixth. Her team-high sixth two-bagger of the year scored sophomore right fielder Chelsea Whalley (Calgary, Alta.) who had singled and stole second.
Neither team would score again in regulation and ITB in the eight would decide matters. Colgate scored its ITB runner without a hit on a sacrifice bunt and RBI sacrifice fly while the Hatters could not advance sophomore pinch runner Lindsey Guenther (Deltona, Fla.) past second in the bottom of the eighth. LeCoq used her glove to knock down a hard grounder up the middle by Perna leading off the inning that might have scored Guenther if it had gotten through the infield; she then set down the next three Hatters in a row to end the game. Whalley had two hits to lead the Hatters while Martin had two base hits for Colgate.
Stetson is off until next Thursday, March 24 when it ends its season-opening 29-game homestand with a doubleheader against Dartmouth at Patricia Wilson Field. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. with Live Stats and Hatter Vision available at GoHatters.com.
