Macon, Ga. - Host Mercer swept an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader from the Stetson softball team (15-20, 1-5 A-Sun) at Sikes Field on Saturday by scores of 3-2 (8 innings) and 3-1.  Freshman center fielder Chrissy Morello (Ormond Beach, Fla.) had five hits in the twinbill and sophomore catcher Jordan Cleghorn (Ball Ground, Ga.) hit her second home run of the season.

GAME 1 - MERCER 3, STETSON 2 (8 INNINGS)

Stetson pushed across both of its runs in the top of the fifth, loading the bases and scoring two runs on a Mercer error.  That play erased a 1-0 deficit and gave the Hatters a 2-1 lead it would keep into the seventh inning.  Sophomore relief pitcher Camille Czarnecki (Edmonton, Alta.) appeared to be cruising, but down to the last out, Bears catcher Sarah Santana belted a game-tying solo home run.

A single and an error left the Bears threatening to end the game there, but Czarnecki gloved a liner off the bat of right fielder Tiffany Phillips to send the game to extra innings.  After Stetson failed to score in the top of the eighth, Mercer first baseman Kassie Bailey handed Stetson its second walk-off loss in as many days with a leadoff solo home run.  Morello had three hits and her 21st stolen base while sophomore right fielder Chelsea Whalley (Calgary, Alta.) had two base hits.

GAME 2 - MERCER 3, STETSON 1

All three Mercer runs were unearned and scored with two out in the bottom of the first after a Stetson error.  Second baseman Amanda Santa Maria had a two-run double and third baseman Randi Rea followed one batter later with an RBI double.  Cleghorn helped get the Hatters on the board with a solo home run to left field in the top of the sixth, but Stetson would strand two runners in each of the final two innings.

Freshman Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.) gave up just four hits, two walks and no earned runs in a complete game effort.  Jenni Holtz struck out seven in six innings to earn the win for the Bears while Kari Chambers, the game 1 winner, came back in the seventh to earn her first save of the year in the nightcap.

Stetson returns home for a 4 p.m. Thursday A-Sun doubleheader against ETSU, beginning a 10-game homestand at Patricia Wilson Field that wraps up its 2011 home slate.  Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at GoHatters.com.
