DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson softball team fell to 16-23 on the season and 2-8 in Atlantic Sun Conference play with 4-2 and 5-0 losses to visiting USC Upstate (34-9, 6-6 A-Sun) at Patricia Wilson Field on Saturday.  Freshman center fielder Chrissy Morello (Ormond Beach, Fla.) went four for four with a stolen base in the nightcap and had five hits on the day.

First baseman Lauren Quevedo's league-leading 11th home run of the season in the top of the first gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead in the opener that they would not relinquish.  Second baseman Janna Lewis added an RBI double in the third and Quevedo plated another insurance run with an RBI double in the fifth inning.

The Hatters got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth as senior designated player Katelyn Perna (St. Petersburg, Fla.) appeared to hit a three-run home run off NCAA strikeout leader Morgan Childers, but was called out for failing to touch home plate.  Perna was credited with a two-run triple, her first career three-bagger.  The hit also allowed Perna to reach a career high in RBI with 14 on the year.

Childers picked up her 24th win of the season and struck out nine in the process; senior third baseman Jill Semento (Umatilla, Fla.) hit her fifth double of the year while Morello had Stetson's only other hit besides the double and home run-turned-triple.  Freshman Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.) went the distance in the circle for the Hatters and took the loss.

Shortstop Cheyanna Olrich went three for four with two RBI in the nightcap as USC Upstate used a four-run fourth inning to vault to a 5-0 win.  Morello had four singles and her 24th stolen base of the year, but Stetson managed just three other hits against Spartan freshman pitcher Hannah Alexander.  Sophomore Camille Czarnecki (Edmonton, Alta.) threw three-plus scoreless innings of relief in place of sophomore Courtney Gunby (Bishop, Ga.), who took the loss for Stetson.  Morello has 19 base hits in 34 at-bats (.559 batting average) in A-Sun play as a rookie.

The Hatters host Belmont in an A-Sun doubleheader at 4 p.m. Thursday.  Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at GoHatters.com.
