DeLand, Fla. - Freshman pitcher Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.) tossed a complete game two-hitter to lead the Stetson softball team (19-25) to a 3-1 win over visiting Florida A&M (22-21) at Patricia Wilson Field on Wednesday.  Lightning in the fifth inning forced the cancellation of the scheduled second game of the doubleheader; the game was by rule declared a no-contest.

In the game that was completed, sophomore right fielder Chelsea Whalley (Calgary, Alta.) drilled a solo home run over the right center field fence with two out in the bottom of the second, putting the Hatters up 1-0 on her second homer of the season.  Lady Rattlers third baseman Francesca Singletary drew her team level with an RBI double in the top of the fourth but was stranded at third base to end the inning.  Owen had been perfect through the first three frames.

Stetson would score the winning run in the bottom of the sixth without a base hit as junior shortstop Chelsey Trotto (Lantana, Fla.) led off with a walk, stole second, was sacrificed to third by senior third baseman Jill Semento (Umatilla, Fla.), then scored on a Jennifer Lindsey wild pitch to put the Hatters ahead 2-1.  Sophomore catcher Jordan Cleghorn (Ball Ground, Ga.) tacked on an insurance run with a single, stolen base and alert baserunning, coming home all the way from second on senior designated player Rachel Lowe's (Okeechobee, Fla.) infield single.  Cleghorn never stopped at third base as the Florida A&M first baseman was busy protesting the umpire's "safe" call on Lowe.

Owen allowed just one run on two hits and a walk in seven innings, striking out two in the process to earn her seventh win of the season.  Lindsey was tagged with the loss, also pitching a complete game.  Trotto finished with two hits and her 21st and 22nd stolen bases of the season; Lowe had two hits and her first steal of the year as well while Cleghorn's swipe of second was also her first of 2011.  Coupled with her first career home run May 6, 2010 against Jacksonville, Whalley has now homered on Stetson's final regular season day at Patricia Wilson Field two years in a row.

Despite Lowe hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, Florida A&M led Stetson 3-2 in the top of the fifth when play was called due to lightning.  With FAMU facing a long bus ride home to Tallahassee, the decision to simply end the game was reached within minutes of play being stopped.  Since five full innings were not completed, the game becomes a no-contest and statistics, including what would have been Lowe's seventh home run of the year, do not count.

The Hatters travel to FGCU for a key A-Sun doubleheader starting Friday at 5 p.m. in Fort Myers.  A link to Live Stats is available at while fans can watch FGCU's broadcast on ASun.TV.  Stetson concluded its 2011 home slate at Patricia Wilson Field today.
