Jacksonville, Fla. - Host North Florida (24-29, 8-10 Atlantic Sun) used the masterful pitching of freshman phenom Cortney Radke (24 strikeouts in two complete games) to sweep a doubleheader from the visiting Stetson softball team (19-29, 4-14 A-Sun) on Saturday at the UNF Softball Complex 5-0 and 6-1. Freshman center fielder Chrissy Morello (Ormond Beach, Fla.) led the Hatters with four hits and two stolen bases on the day.
Radke, the NCAA Division I leader in strikeouts by a freshman with 303 punchouts in 2011, whiffed 14 in a four-hit shutout in the opener. The Ospreys scored single runs in five of their six trips to the plate, highlighted by a solo home run from third baseman Alyson Bailey in the bottom of the second. Freshman Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.) took the loss for the Hatters. Morello was nearly Stetson's entire offense, singling twice and twice stealing second base. With 27 steals, Morello has the highest total by a Stetson freshman since Tiffany Tolleson was fourth in the nation with 54 stolen bases in 2000.
The second game saw Stetson push a run across in the top of the second, getting a bases-loaded walk from sophomore second baseman Alyssa Oddo (Covina, Calif.) to tie the game 1-1. However, subpar Hatter defense led to four unearned runs in the ballgame and UNF ended up cruising to a 6-1 victory. Radke struck out 10 more batters and set her school's single-season strikeout record in the process. Oddo added a triple in the seventh inning, her second of the year. Sophomore Camille Czarnecki (Edmonton, Alta.) took the loss, allowing just two earned runs.
Stetson travels to Jacksonville for a May 6 doubleheader, starting at 5 p.m., that will conclude the 2011 season.
