DeLand, Fla. - Five runs in the first two innings vaulted the Stetson softball team (11-5) to a 7-1 win over visiting Boston College (11-5) Tuesday at Patricia Wilson Field, snapping a three-game losing streak for the Hatters. Senior shortstop Chelsey Trotto (Lantana, Fla.) hit her fourth home run of the season while sophomore pitcher Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.) picked up her fifth victory of 2012.

With one on and two out in the bottom of the first, Stetson freshman third baseman Demi Meza (Oxnard, Calif.) worked a base on balls against Eagles starter Amanda Horowitz, setting the stage for senior left fielder Brittany Knipp (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) to rifle a double to the base of the wall in right center field to score two runs and give the Hatters an early 2-0 lead.

BC got a run back in the top of the second on a Maria Pandolfo RBI single, but Owen then worked out of a bases-loaded situation with no further damage, inducing a force-out at the plate and a pop-up to end the inning.

The Hatters needed just one hit to plate three runs in the bottom of the second and put the game out of reach. Horowitz walked three hitters in a four-batter span, loading the bases for Owen, who earned an RBI painfully by getting hit by a pitch. Meza chased Horowitz from the game immediately thereafter with a two-run single.

Trotto gave Stetson some more insurance in the sixth, connecting for a one-out, two-run home run to left field off relief pitcher Nicole D'Argento. She scored twice and stole her sixth base of 2012 to go along with her fourth homer of the season.

Owen allowed just one run on six hits and two walks while striking out four to improve to 5-2 on the year. Junior right fielder Chelsea Whalley (Calgary, Alta.) joined Trotto in the stolen base column with her second of the season.

Boston College outfielder Ali Lynette-Krech led all players in the game with two hits; Horowitz dropped to 4-3 on the year with the loss. D'Argento struck out two in 4.1 relief innings.

Originally scheduled as a doubleheader, Stetson and Boston College will instead meet again in the finale of this two-game series tomorrow at 4:00 pm. Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at
