May 6, 2005

DeLand, Fla. 'Stetson softball came back to take game two 6-5 in extra innings after falling 5-1 in the first game of an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader against UCF Friday night at the Stetson Softball Field on Senior Day.

With the split, the Hatters finish the regular season 35-18 and 13-7 in A-Sun play to earn the fifth seed in the conference tournament next week. The Golden Knights are now 41-26-1 and 13-7, good enough for the fourth seed in the tournament.

"I am pleased that we hit the ball so well today after two weeks without playing a game," said head coach Frank Griffin. "UCF is a good team and I'm proud of the character our kids showed coming from behind after a loss to take the second game tonight."

In game one, Jania Shinhoster blasted a three-run home run in the top of the second to give UCF the early lead. The Golden Knights added two runs in the fourth with a Brittani Lindheim two-RBI single to right center to take a 5-0 advantage.

Stetson put their only run of the game on the board when freshman Nicole Forbes (Tampa, Fla.) walked with bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

With the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning of game two, Hatter senior Sherilynn Wilder (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) sent a line drive into the left center gap to score pinch runner Laura Whalen (West Palm Beach, Fla.) from first for the extra-inning walk-off double.

'It's the kind of thing I dream of before a game and it was an absolutely phenomenal feeling,' said Wilder. 'It was great that it could happen on Senior Day in my last game at our home field.'

After UCF took a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning with two runs when Amber Lamb walked with bases loaded and Crystle Krafft had an RBI single, junior Melissa Wiggins (Temple Terrace, Fla.) set a new school record with her third home run of the game to right center to send the game into extra innings.

With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Wiggins?blasted a solo shot straight away to center for her second home run of the game, 12th of the season,?for the 4-3 Hatter lead.

UCF had struck early, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning off a Stetson error and a passed ball.

In the bottom of the second, Wilder singled to center field to score junior Angie Eguilior (Miami, Fla.) who had reached on a single to left center for Stetson's first run. Wiggs then?tripled down the right field line in the next inning and Wiggins brought her home with her first home run of the evening to tie the game 3-3.

Senior Brittani Houghton (Ft Myers, Fla.) suffered the loss in the circle in game one, allowing three earned runs off 10 hits while striking out nine batters. Junior Jennifer Buckley (Pensacola, Fla.) improved to 7-5 with the win in game two, allowing one earned run off seven hits while striking out eight.

Wiggins led the Hatters at the plate for the day, going 6-for-7 with four RBIs and three home runs. Houghton was also 4-for-7 and Wilder had two RBIs.

Stetson will face second-seed Florida Atlantic Thursday in the first round of the A-Sun Championship in Boca Raton, Fla., at 1 p.m. UCF will face No. 3 Lipscomb (26-22, 13-7 A-Sun).
