Former varsity players Spence Purnell and Diego Morales continue their basketball careers through starting a Club Basketball Team. Both athletes were former Division 1 players that used to play on the varsity team. They will now be taking their talents to the club level along with eight other students: TeeJae Persad, Vito Swarzak, Carrington Hogan, Taylor Dechant, Sam Randles, Shane Scovil, Adin Hadley, and Misha Hyman. The team will look to compete throughout the state of Florida against the few other schools that also have club basketball teams. They also have plans to play in the UF hosted Swamp Shootout and two other regional tournaments that could get them a bid into a national tournament.
Spence said he's very excited for the opportunity to be apart of starting this new program at Stetson and feels that we have the ability to be very competitive early on. Stetson is leading the pack being one of only four schools throughout Florida to offer a Club Basketball program and with success hopefully other schools will follow in the upcoming year to create a Florida Club Basketball League. The team will also aim to host a tournament in their first year to help promote club basketball and the gathering of teams from both north Florida and south Florida as Stetson is a middle ground for teams.
