DeLAND—Stetson out-shot St. Leo, 20-6, but the Lions found the back of the net twice en route to a 2-0 win over the Hatters, Friday at the Athletic Training Center.

The Hatters (0-2-1) had eight shots on goal to just three for the Lions (1-0-0), but Stetson couldn’t capitalize on a series of close-range attempts at the beginning of the game and in the final 10 minutes.

Sophomore Eduarda Pavao’s header from inside eight yards was stopped by St. Leo goalkeeper Abby Evans, and Evans stoned Sarah Collins on a point-blank attempt less than a minute later.

St. Leo scored its first goal in the 14th minute when Arielle Kabangu took a quick pass from Katie Waddell and hit the lower left corner of the goal.

The Lions maintained their 1-0 lead until Selena James scored off a direct kick from about 30 yards away in the 58th minute. Her goal made it a 2-0 affair.

Stetson attempted to rally in the final minutes, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Senior Alexis Trybinski had several close calls, hitting the left post on one shot and sailing another just wide of the goal.

Freshman Ashley Ingolia made one save for the Hatters while the goalkeeper tandem of Imani Clayton and Evans combined to make eight saves for the Lions.

Stetson next hosts Navy, 1 p.m., Sunday.
