On Saturday, February 18th, the Stetson Tennis Club competed in the USTA Tennis on Campus Florida Championships at the Sanlando Tennis Courts in Altamonte Springs. The club took two teams to represent Stetson.
The format of the tournament was a round robin style where each team played three matches and were seeded depending on overall number of games won in all three matches. This determined if the team was in the Gold Division, comprised of the top ten, or the Silver Division. The Stetson A team was comprised of team captain Melissa Palmer, Erin Davis, Eric Lee, and Justin Li. The first match was against FGCU B team. Erin and Melissa won women's doubles 6-4 after being down 3-1 to start. Justin and Eric won men's doubles 6-2. With Melissa and Eric winning 6-4 in mixed doubles, the overall total number of games won was tied. This put the match into a super tiebreak where Eric and Melissa were able to win the tiebreaker 7-3, making Stetson win the overall match against FGCU 23-22. The next match was against the UCF D team and the men's doubles won. In mixed, Melissa and Justin came back from being down 4-0 to a close loss 6-5, only losing the tiebreaker.
The Stetson B team was comprised of team captain Ashley Tepe, Dan Lozada, Mike Wolodkowicz, Alexander Bayon, and Darina Linnik. They were off to a good start against UCF E team. Ashley and Darina in women's doubles won 6-2 and Dan and Ashley won mixed doubles by a score of 6-4. They only lost the overall match by one game, 18-19. After the round robin, they made it to the Silver Division.
It was a great showing by both the Stetson A and B teams this year. All members had a great time playing a lot of tennis in one day and are already looking forward to the USTA Tennis on Campus series next year. You can read the full review of the weekend here. |
