On Sunday, September 9th, eight Steson Surf Club members took on the waves at the NSB inlet in the first NSSA Contest for the 12/13 season. Men's Shortboard included Willie Lane, Cory Hyatt, Danny Moscato, Hayden Forehand, and Sean McKnight. Men's Longboard included Charlie Lane and Roth Allen. Women's Shortboard included Hunter Douglas. Willie Lane was the only shortboard rider for Stetson to advance into the semi's but was unable to qualify for the final heat. Charlie Lane advanced to the final for the longboard division but missed his final heat due to free surfing down the beach which resulted in a automatic 6th place finish for him. The day was rainy and the contest officials elected to run double heats to quicken the day along. Hunter Douglas advanced through several heats and placed 5th amongst the Women's shortboard competition, pictured above. Stetson as a team finished 7th overall.
Clu president, Willie Lane, said that "everyone surfed really well. Roth had an impressive heat, but was unable to beat out the competition in his round 1 heat. Sean McKnight swallowed some water at the beginning of his heat and came in to recover as a precautionary measure. Overall the team had a good fun day and everyone stayed safe." Willie also commented on the water being sharky, but there were plenty of fish as well to keep them at bay. The team looks forward to their next competition at the inlet on October 7th and invites anyone who want to come out and support the Stetson Surf Team.
