Over the weekend the Stetson
Tennis club traveled to Tampa to compete in the “USF Grand Slam Tournament”. On
the first day of competition Stetson played University of South Florida C. In
Men’s Doubles, Logan Reid and Dan Lozada won 6-1, while in Women’s Doubles
Taylor Day and Erin Davis lost 4-6. Kali Ballard won the Women’s Single match
6-0, while Lozada and Davis won Mixed Doubles 6-4, giving Stetson the overall
win. The second match of the day was against Florida Gulf Coast University C,
with Day and Ballard winning in Women’s Doubles 6-4, and Reid and Lozada
winning Men’s Doubles 6-3. Stetson also won both single matches with Davis
winning 6-5 and Reid winning 6-1. To finish the match Day and Lozada won the
Mixed Doubles match 6-3, giving Stetson their second overall win of the
tournament. The last match of the first day for Stetson was versus University
of Florida A. To open the match Ballard lost in Women’s Single 1-6, followed by
Ballard’s and Day’s Women’s Double loss. Reid won Men’s Singles, but Florida
took the next two matches in Men’s Doubles and Mixed doubles with a score of
1-6 in both, giving Stetson an overall loss. At the end of the first day of
competition Stetson finished with 62 points, enough to place them in the gold
bracket for the second day of the tournament.
On the second day of the
tournament Stetson was matched by against University of Central Florida A. To
begin the match Lozada and Reid won the Men’s Doubles match 6-2, and Day and
Davis won the Women’s Doubles match 6-4. During the Singles matches Lozada won
6-0 and Ballard won 6-4. In the Mixed Doubles match Davis and Lozada came back
to win after trailing 1-6. Giving the overall win to Stetson and advancing to
the next round. Stetson’s next opponent would be USF A. Ballard and Day began
the match by losing 1-6 in Women’s Doubles, followed up by Reid and Lozada’s
2-6 loss in Men’s Doubles. Reid lost the Men’s Single match 1-6, but Ballard
won the Women’s Single match 6-5, but the last match was Davis and Lozada in
Mixed Doubles losing 2-6, giving USF the overall win and ending Stetson’s run
in the tournament. Ballard’s win in the Women’s Single match was tough, lasting
an hour, with both doubles matches being played hard by both teams. The next
tournament for Stetson Tennis Club is the Tournament of Champions in Orlando,
Florida on February 16th.
