Former PGA golfer Larry Watson joined the Stetson University Athletics staff in 2012 as Director of Golf Operations and Head Men’s Golf Coach.

Watson brings more than 40 years of golf experience to the program along with a passion for player development.

“My goal as golf coach is to ensure our student-athletes have an athletic experience that is equivalent to the academic experience they gain at Stetson University. I strive to elevate the competitive schedule to achieve a broader national exposure for the program. My personal goal is to help my recruits learn how to function as a group and share successes and build relationships strong enough to last a lifetime.”

During Watson’s tenure, the Men’s Golf Team has achieved 23 A-Sun Conference All-Academic and honor roll selections. The team’s average GPA is 3.24. The A-Sun Conference has selected members of the Men’s Golf Team as Player of the Week 15 times. Dustin Dingus received the Wendell N. Jarrard Sr. Award for Excellence in 2015.

Born and raised in Memphis, Tenn., Watson played baseball at Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tenn., before going on to play for Memphis State, now known as the University of Memphis. After college, his athletic interests turned to golf.

He joined the PGA of America in 1969 and began his career in golf serving as a teaching professional for some of the most exclusive golf clubs in Memphis. He achieved Class A membership in 1974 and became a touring pro, competing on the PGA Tour, in Europe and later, as an associate member of the Champions Tour.

Watson is well known for his long career with the Acushnet Company, where he served as the Player Relations Executive for Titleist and Scotty Cameron Putters. He became known for his caring and charismatic presence on the pro tours and eventually became an instructor to many PGA Tour players.

While working with some of the most talented student players in the Central Florida area, Watson has developed a strong network among high school and college coaches.

Watson and his wife, Barbara, reside in DeLand.
