Stetson freshman defensive back Ryan Powers has been named Pioneer Football League co-Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Powers, from Jupiter, Fla., earns his first weekly PFL honor after blocking a punt and returning it 28 yards for a touchdown to keep Stetson in a PFL game it ultimately lost 45-24 at Jacksonville, Saturday.

Trailing 24-17 in the third quarter, the Stetson defense forced a three-and-out and Powers turned that effort into points with his punt block which he scooped up and returned for the game-tying touchdown.

He spent most of the day in pass coverage where he racked up eight solo tackles, forced a fumble and broke up a pass.

Through 10 games Powers ranks second on the Hatters with 73 total tackles, including three tackles for loss. He also has two interceptions and has forced a team-high four fumbles.

Stetson closes the 2013 season when it visits Mercer, 4 p.m., Saturday in Macon, Ga.
