Head Coach Roger Hughes

“The fans have been great. The support we have gotten from everyone at the university and in the community is phenomenal. We expect a great crowd next week, and we have to play much better. FIT is a better team and we realize how we lost the game to them last year by getting complacent.”

“You like to get the backups some experience and moral is better when you get a chance to get everyone into the game. We will look at the film. I don’t want to sound like I am not happy, but I am not happy. We need to finish a lot better. We need to be cleaner at the end. It got sloppy at the end, we had a personal foul, and you can’t do that if you are going to play championship football.”

“Overall, I was really pleased with how we came out to start the game. We gave up an interception right away, but the defense held them to a field goal. We had a blocked punt right away and scored on that. There are a lot of good things we can take from this game, but the thing I am most disappointed in is the way we just let down emotionally. We just didn’t play well in the second half. We have to find a way to play with a certain emotional intensity regardless of what the score is, and we didn’t do that.”

“Part of becoming a championship team is understanding how to handle success. We still have a ways to go with that. With that said, we put together some long drives, but we had to take field goals. It was not bad, but we have to finish those drives and get touchdown instead of field goals. We only punted twice tonight, and one was late in the game. While you can’t be too unhappy, we left a lot of points on the field because we had a lot of miscues that stopped drives, and we can’t have that.”

“Overall, I thought Ryan did OK. He had good command of the offense and checked down very well. Overall, as far as managing the game, getting us into the right play, and executing, I thought he did a pretty good job.”

“A.J. got better as the game went along. I thought Jerami Singleton ran the ball well when he got in there. Dre Long has to be more physical. Cole we worked in there some because he missed a lot of the preseason with an injury. Yonker is very consistent in that he can catch and run. We have a number of backs that we can work in there, but they need to play at a high level when they get in there.”

“I thought, overall, the offensive line played well. We gave up one sack that shouldn’t have happened. Overall, they played well. We ran the ball effectively and we were able to get the numbers right in our formations even though they were doing a lot of things from a stunting standpoint that we hadn’t seen and we handled it well.”

“Overall, I thought they did OK. We tried to get an extra body up there in a four-man front, which I think Warner hadn’t seen much. We had some suspensions where we held some guys out for violations of team rules. Because of that, we had to work some other guys in there. We will look at the film. Overall, I thought we held the line of scrimmage pretty well.”

“He is who he is. It has gotten to the point where you expect big things. He intercepted a pass and returned a blocked punt for a touchdown. He is a ball-hawk and we are better when he is on the field for us.”

“I think our kids are looking forward to that game. They felt that we let one slip away there. It will be fun to be at home in front of our home crowd. We had a great crowd here tonight. I think it is going to be a fun atmosphere. These freshmen, who have not yet played in front of the home crowd, I am looking forward to seeing their reactions. They are like the 12th man. I know that is cliché, but it really is. I know our kids get jacked up for that. Hopefully, the students and the town will get involved. I know they have a new Hatter Village. I think we can play an exciting brand of football, and I think we will if we can put it all together.”

DB Donald Payne

“We game planned for the veer and practiced against it because that is not something we have seen in the past. We practiced against it and had it down. They came out and ran it, and we were all in the right spots at the right times. The coaches had us game-planned perfectly.”

“Coach Young got on us. We wanted to have a shutout, but we got together after that scoring drive and, as leaders, we got everyone fired up to keep them from scoring any more, and that is what we did.”

“That was an infamous game for us. We are going to go in expecting a fight. We knew going in today that Warner was coming for us, well we are coming for Florida Tech. We have had them marked on our schedule and we are going to go in expecting to get a win. I hope their coaches liked what they saw here tonight. We are going to have to game-plan hard for them because we don’t really know what they are going to run.”

QB Ryan Tentler

“It is nice when the things that we do in practice, making plays in practice, produces in the games. We have a lot to work on. We scored 32 points in the first half and just three in the second half. Last year we had a problem coming out and playing well in the second half and we have worked to avoid that this year. We need to do a lot of work on second half. We came out a little flat and complacent because we knew we had the lead. The energy that we had in the first half wasn’t there. We have to practice keeping that energy and tempo up in the second half.”

“Special teams were huge, unbelievable. Of course, it was Donald Payne that started us off with a touchdown. Just had to have been.”
