CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina used a 7-0 run to start the second half to defeat the Stetson lacrosse team by a score of 15-5 on Wednesday night. Freshman Lindsay Summers led the Hatters with three goals in the defeat.

Stetson was playing well early on, taking a 2-1 lead on the Chanticleers with 13:44 to play in the first half after freshman Christina Wittemeier and Summers put the Hatters on top.

After a pair of scores by Coastal Carolina, Summers came back with her second goal of the period off of an assist by sophomore Maylis Broderick to tie the game at 3-3 just before halftime.

The Chants came out of the break determined and rattled off seven straight goals in the first 10 minutes to take a 10-3 lead with 20 minutes remaining in the game.

Another Summers score, this time from freshman Ana Baranowski, and a free position goal by sophomore Mary Kate O’Sullivan were the extend of the Hatters’ offensive output in the second. Coastal’s early run in the period proved to be too much to overcome as the Chants went on to earn the 15-5 victory.

Neither team was able to gain ground in the first half thanks to 35 total turnovers. Stetson gave it away 20 times, while Coastal turned it over 15 times in the first. The Chants held a 16-6 advantage in draw controls and led 35-27 in ground balls at the final buzzer. Stetson was outshot 36-14.

Keri White, Rachel Ferrar, and Charlotte O’Leary led Coastal Carolina with three goals apiece in the victory.

Stetson sophomore Caili Guilday made 11 saves in goal and led all players with seven ground balls. Summers added six pick-ups, while Baranowski led the Hatters with four draws on the day.

The Hatters will return home on Saturday to take on Sacred Heart at 12:00 p.m. Saturday’s game was originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m., but was moved up an hour to accommodate the Pioneers’ travel schedule.
