MACON, Ga. – Sophomore Danielle Horgan garnered Atlantic Sun Lacrosse Player of the Week Honors, following her seven goal performance vs. Kennesaw State, the conference announced Monday.
Horgan’s seven goals accounted for 30 percent of Stetson’s total offense as the Hatters edged the Owls 23-21 in Overtime, Saturday. It was as a season high offensive output for the second year attacker, as she had not previously scored more than two goals in a contest during 2014. This marks the first such honor in her two-year collegiate career.
The Miami, Fla., native put the ball in the net half a dozen times in regulation as KSU and Stetson headed to overtime, knotted at 18-18. Horgan would score one more time in the extra frame, the first of five Hatter goals in OT, to propel Stetson to its first win of the season.
Aside from her seven goals Saturday, Horgan also led the Hatters with eight shots and was tied for the team lead in ground balls, with five. The seven scores for the attacker was also a career high, surpassing her old mark of four, which she accomplished twice, once against Detroit and the other ironically enough against the same Kennesaw State team in 2013.
Horgan was the first Hatter to score against the Owls, just a half a minute into the contest to give Stetson an early 1-0 lead. She scored five goals in the first half and at one point had put the ball past the KSU goal keeper twice in just a 45 second stretch.
Monday’s award marks the second time this season a Stetson player has received ‘Player of the Week’ honors from the A-Sun as goal keeper Caili Guilday was named Defensive POW, following her performances in front of the net vs. Wagner (Mar. 17) and Marist (Mar. 21).
The Hatters, who stand at 1-0 in conference next take on Jacksonville, Saturday, Apr. 12 at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.
