DeLAND—Stetson lacrosse head coach Christy Leach announced today the addition of Maggie Smith to the coaching staff. Smith will join the Hatters on August 13.
A 2014 graduate of Notre Dame, Smith was a four-year letter winner for the Fighting Irish. Team captain her final two seasons and the 2014 co-National Defender of the Year, Smith was a three-time All-American. She earned first-team All-Big East honors as a sophomore and junior, and was a second-team All-ACC honoree as a senior. Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Peace Studies.
“I’m really excited to get down there and join Christy. She’s very motivated in what she wants to do and I can’t wait to be a part of it,” said Smith. “I’m excited to get to work and help the program be successful.”
Despite recently graduating, Smith has an extensive coaching background. She spent three summers (2010-12) as an assistant coach with the M&D Lacrosse Club in Columbia, Md., and also served as a camp instructor at Notre Dame, Duke and Maryland each summer since 2011.
“Though I didn’t know her personally when I first began interviewing candidates, I always admired Maggie as a player,” said Leach. “I admired the way she played, especially her work ethic. I think she’s a great fit for our program. She has a dedication and passion for our sport. She is full of ideas, and I think she’ll be a role model for the team.”
Stetson begins its third season of lacrosse in 2015. Leach was named head coach on June 23.
