The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced Friday that the Stetson University sand volleyball team is a recipient of the 2011-12 AVCA Team Academic Award.
The award is presented annually to volleyball programs who maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The Hatters completed the 2011-12 academic year with a 3.39 team GPA.
"It is so exciting for our sand volleyball team to earn national recognition for their academic prowess in their first year of existence," Stetson volleyball head coach Tim Loesch said. "This achievement sets the academic bar high for future teams, since we had a very young sand team we hope to repeat this again next year."
The Stetson sand volleyball program was one of 102 recipients on the NCAA Division I level to be honored with the AVCA Team Academic Award.
Loesch said the indoor volleyball team nearly earned this award also, barely missing the 3.3 team GPA threshold by two-hundredths of a point (3.28).
"I'm very proud of both of our volleyball teams for their hard work in the classroom at such a prestigious university," Loesch said.
