The Stetson sand volleyball team wrapped up its first weekend of play on Saturday with the Stetson Spring Break Tournament pairs brackets. The combination of Tiffany Creamer and Kristin Lind claimed the championship in the lower bracket. The freshmen pair went undefeated for the whole weekend in their collegiate sand debut.
In the finals of the lower bracket, Creamer and Lind faced familiar competition as they took on fellow teammates, senior Katie DiGirolamo and junior Julie Bassett. While the veteran players were challenging opponents, the newcomers ultimately came away victorious with the scores of 21-17, 21-18.
Coach Meghan Bryant was not surprised by the strong performance from Creamer and Lind.
"This year I think that they are going to bring a lot to our team because they coming in as freshmen and playing big roles," said Bryant.
Lower bracket play was single-elimination with only one set to 28. During the semi-finals, the scoring returned to the normal two-out-of-three sets to 21 for a match. Stetson played pairs from Tulane, Warner University, and Florida Gulf Coast University in addition to its own. The bracket consisted of all pairs except the top two seeds from each school.
All the Stetson pairs in the lower division performed well. The Hatters had four of their six pairs make it to the quarterfinals, and every pair scored over 20 points in the first round of play. From there, the duo of junior Maren Rygh and senior Jordann Dierickx reached the semi-finals along with the pairs of Creamer and Lind as well as DiGirolamo and Bassett.
Likewise, Stetson proved to be tough competition in the upper bracket. In this division, the top two pairs from each team competed in a double-elimination bracket with regular scoring.
Stetson's second seed junior Savannah Byl and sophomore Madison Tormey went 2-2 for the day. The pair beat Warner's top seed in the first round of play 21-9, 21-13. In the quarterfinals, the pair narrowly lost to Tulane's top pair of freshmen Tea Juric and sophomore Jackie Wegner. Byl and Tormey rallied back and defeated the Tulane second seed before falling again in a tough three-set match against FGCU's Kaitlyn Holm and Whitney Masters.
In the same bracket, senior Kaley Melville and freshmen Kaylee Anderson went undefeated until the finals, where they faced Juric and Wegner. Despite having beaten the Tulane pair during the semi-final round, Melville and Anderson fell to Juric and Wegner in back to back matches and finished second in the upper bracket of the tournament.
"I was really proud of Kaylee," said Melville of her partner. "It's not easy to play at the one seed as a freshman, but she played her heart out today."
This weekend the Hatters travel to Cocoa Beach for the Ron Jon Beach 'N Boards Fest.
