Tallahassee, Fla. - The Stetson sand volleyball team wrapped up its stay at Florida State's Seminole Sand Battle on Sunday with the Gold and Silver Division pairs brackets. The combination of sophomore Katie DiGirolamo (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Alisha Hoffman (Leesburg, Fla.) took two matches against opponents from A-Sun rival FGCU. In addition to the Eagles, Stetson was facing incredibly stiff competition from host Florida State and USC; two rosters loaded with players from their 2011 NCAA Final Four indoor volleyball squads. Based on yesterday's dual match results, pairs were placed in either the Gold or Silver Divisions for bracket play. Freshmen Maren Rygh (Tonsberg, Norway) and Alexa Stonish (Stony Brook, N.Y.) joined freshman Julie Bassett (Wadsworth, Ohio) and sophomore Kaley Melville (New Germany, Minn.) in the Gold bracket for Stetson. The silver bracket saw DiGirolamo and Hoffman joined by the fellow Hatter pairs of freshman Savannah Byl (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) as well as freshmen Claudia Kalin (Valparaiso, Ind.) and Taylor Story (Plano, Texas); Byl and Ream won a match vs. FGCU as well. Stetson returns to action at 2:00 pm Friday, March 30 for a dual match at FGCU. The Hatters and Eagles have split two meetings already this season, with Stetson winning 5-0 at home on March 17 and FGCU eking out a 3-2 victory yesterday in Seminole Sand Battle action.
