DeLand, Fla. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced the team and pair selections for the inaugural AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship on Tuesday. Stetson freshman Julie Bassett (Wadsworth, Ohio) and her partner, sophomore Kaley Melville (New Germany, Minn.) will represent the Hatters in pairs play April 27-29 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
The AVCA has partnered with CBS Sports Network for national broadcast coverage of the event. The network will air portions of the competition starting at 9:00 pm ET Wednesday, June 6 and concluding at the same time the following Wednesday. Each block is slated for one hour.
Four teams and 16 pairs will compete for national titles. Pepperdine, Florida State, Long Beach State and College of Charleston will go after the team title while each of those four schools' top two pairs will join Bassett/Melville and the top pair from USC, Hawai'i, Florida Atlantic, UAB and Atlantic Sun Conference rival North Florida.
Stetson's duo will compete in pool play on Friday, April 27 with those results determining seeds for Sunday's 16-team, single-elimination championship round. Bassett and Melville are in Pool 3 along with Elyse Chubb/Lizzie Theesfeld (College of Charleston), Kim Hill/Lilla Frederick (Pepperdine) and Caitlin Ledoux/Tara Roenicke (Long Beach State). Bassett and Melville could end up facing UNF's Dagnija Medina and Emily Strack in the championship round.
The Hatters will be in Jacksonville, Fla. this weekend competing in the inaugural Atlantic Sun Conference Championships. The A-Sun is the only conference in the nation sponsoring sand volleyball at a championship level in 2012, the sport's inaugural season on the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women list.
