DeLand, Fla. - Stetson sophomore guard Victoria McGowan (Inkster, Mich.) has been named Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Basketball Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. This is the first career A-Sun award for McGowan and the second NotW honor for a Hatter in 2010-11.
McGowan, in her first season with the Hatters after transferring from Bowling Green, filled up the stat sheet Saturday and Monday in home victories over Mercer and Kennesaw State by averaging 13.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists in the two contests. In Saturday's 67-59 win over Mercer, she scored nine points, handed out seven assists and pulled down five rebounds while on Monday in a 74-60 triumph over KSU, McGowan scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half, also finishing with nine rebounds and six assists.
On the season, McGowan leads the Hatters in scoring (14.0 ppg), assists (73 - 4.3 apg) and steals (45). Prior to Monday's game she was ranked 38th in the nation in steals per game with 2.8 takeaways per contest.
The Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week award, which debuted with the 2010-11 season, has now been won by two of Stetson's three eligible players as freshman forward Sasha Sims (Fayetteville, Ga.) was honored on December 28. The Hatters improved to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in A-Sun action with the wins; they host 14-0 Florida Gulf Coast, one of the nation's last two undefeated teams, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20 at the Edmunds Center.
