DeLand, Fla. - Stetson point guard Corey Walden has been named the Atlantic Sun conference Newcomer of the Week for the week ending February 7, 2011. It is the first conference award for the freshman out of Ormond Beach, Florida.
Walden led the Hatters to big win over ETSU Sunday afternoon in the Edmunds Center and in the process became the first Hatter since 2001 to play all 40 minutes of a regulation game. It was last accomplished by Will Robertson against Georgia State on February 17, 2001.
In the win over the Buccaneers Walden led team in scoring with 15 points, rebounding with nine and steals with six. His rebound and steal totals were career-highs. In Friday's loss to USC Upstate Walden distributed a career-high nine assists, had four steals and led team in scoring with 13 points.
On the week Walden averaged 14.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 5.0 steals. He also had one block and shot 11-for-24 (.458) from field.
A serious candidate for conference Freshman of the Year, Walden is currently 2nd in the A-Sun in steals (2.52 per game), 2nd in free throw percentage (.839), 9th in assists (3.29 per game), 11th in assist/turnover ratio (1.10), and 17th in scoring (11.5 points per game).
