DeLand, Fla. - Stetson sophomore guard Victoria McGowan (Inkster, Mich.) has been named Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Basketball Newcomer of the Week for February 15, the league office announced Tuesday. This is the second such honor for McGowan in 2010-11.
McGowan averaged 10.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game as the Hatters swept Kennesaw State (65-52) and Mercer (71-62) on the road Saturday and Monday to improve to 14-11 overall and 10-6 in A-Sun play. Monday evening at Mercer, she recorded her third double-double of the season and approached triple double status with 11 points, a career-high 12 rebounds, seven assists and four steals to lead the Hatters to a win in the Atlantic Sun Game of the Week on CSS and Bright House Sports Network.
Interestingly enough, McGowan earned her other Newcomer of the Week nod on January 18 for strong performances in two wins that also came against Mercer and Kennesaw State, then in the Edmunds Center. She handed out seven assists in both Stetson victories over Mercer this season. The Feb. 15 A-Sun Player of the Week award went to ETSU forward Latisha Belcher.
For the season, McGowan leads the Hatters in scoring (14.2 ppg), assists (111 - 4.4 apg) and steals (67 - 2.7 spg), ranking eighth, fourth and second in the A-Sun in those respective categories. Stetson has won three straight and nine of its last 12 to move into a tie for third place in the league standings; with 14 victories the Hatters have equaled the combined win total of their last two campaigns and need just one more win to assure themselves a winning regular season for the first time since 2004-05.
Stetson hosts Campbell at 5 p.m. Thursday in the opening act of a Camel-Hatter doubleheader at the Edmunds Center; the men's game will follow at approximately 7:15 p.m. Live Stats and Hatter Vision are available at GoHatters.com.
