DeLand, Fla. - Stetson junior midfielder Jonathan Mendoza (Bogota, Colombia) was named Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Soccer Co-Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. Mendoza scored two goals, including the game-winner, in one of Stetson's most historic victories in program history on Friday as the Hatters took down #15 Penn State 3-2.
Mendoza would go on to earn All-Tournament Team honors at Ohio State's Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic; he scored twice in the second half to first get Stetson on the scoreboard and then in the 81st minute to put the Hatters ahead of the Nittany Lions to stay. The victory represented Stetson's first win over a Top 25 opponent since defeating Furman on September 6, 2000.
A Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team pick in 2011, a 2010 First Team All-Atlantic Sun honoree and two-time A-Sun All-Tournament Team selection, Mendoza has now won two A-Sun Player of the Week awards after first being honored October 4, 2010 for his strong play in helping Stetson sweep Belmont and Lipscomb on the road. He had two goals and two assists in the latter match.
The other Co-Player of the Week in the Atlantic Sun was ETSU's Alesi Osorio; his teammate Ryan Coulter picked up the Defensive Player of the Week nod.
Stetson (2-1-0) returns to action this weekend with a trip to South Florida to battle FIU (8:30 pm Friday) and Florida Atlantic (2:00 pm Sunday). Live Stats links, if available, will be posted at GoHatters.com.
