Dayton, Nev. - Stetson junior women's golfer Alexandria Buelow (Palm City, Fla.) used a two under par 70 in Tuesday's final round at Dayton Valley Golf Club to tie for first place in Nevada's Wolf Pack Classic and claim her sixth career college tournament victory. The Hatters recorded the second-lowest final round score in the 10-team field with a 298 and rose up the leaderboard for a fifth place finish at 33 over par for 36 holes.
Buelow, who began the final round tied for fourth place at one over par, four strokes off the lead, tied for the low round of the day with co-medalist Peppiina Kaija of San Francisco with a 70 to finish at one under par 144 for the tournament. Buelow tied for first in a fall season opener for the second consecutive season after doing likewise at the 2010 UNCG Starmount Classic; she adds this victory to that triumph as well as the 2009 Holiday Inn Express Hatter Classic, 2010 Cincinnati Spring Invitational, 2011 Siena Homewood Suites Invitational and the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Championships.
Stetson bounced back from an opening 311 to post a 298 on Tuesday, thanks not only to Buelow but the support of sophomores Sammi Smith (Louisville, Ky.) and Claudia Redinger (Durban, South Africa) plus senior Lauren Cate (St. Augustine, Fla.). That trio shot 75-76-77, respectively as Smith and Redinger tied for 17th place at 10 over par and Cate tied for 36th at +14. Sophomore Jenna Hoecker (Rochester, N.Y.) rounded out the team contingent with her second straight nine over par 81 to tie for 45th place.
Sophomore Ryan Ashburn (Largo, Fla.) competed as an individual for the Hatters and shone in the final round with a career-best even par 72 to tie for 17th at +10 with Redinger and Smith.
Buelow and Kaiija's -1 totals gave them two-shot victories over UC Irvine's Sarah Baek and Wyoming's Juanita Rico. San Francisco claimed the Wolf Pack Classic team championship at 22 over par, four strokes clear of UC Irvine. Host Nevada tied for third with Wyoming at +28 with Stetson five behind the Wolf Pack and Cowgirls in fifth place. The Hatters claimed wins over Sacramento State (+42), Bowling Green (+49), Montana (+50), Old Dominion (+54) and Utah Valley (+60).
Stetson, which made its longest road trip of the Head Coach Floyd Kerr era for this event, returns home to Volusia County for this weekend's Xavier Invitational at LPGA International in nearby Daytona Beach.
