Jacksonville, Fla. - Junior setter Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.) recorded 22 assists, seven kills and six digs in the Stetson volleyball team's (9-18, 2-11 Atlantic Sun) season finale on Saturday, a 25-15, 15-25, 25-19, 25-18 loss to host North Florida at UNF Arena. The Hatters end the season with their highest win total since 2007.
Although the match went four sets and many of the team stat differentials were close (.118 to .105 attack percentage and 44-35 in kills in favor of UNF, even 9-9 in blocks), all four sets were actually comfortable wins as the losing team did not reach 20 points even once in any set. Stetson responded to a 25-15 loss in the first set with a win by the exact same score in Set 2, but the Ospreys, playing for their spot in the upcoming A-Sun tournament, closed the Hatters out with a 50-37 combined score after intermission.
Carneal hit .429 on 14 swings to go with her 22-7-6 line, also contributing two blocks. Senior outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) moved into second place on the Stetson all-time appearance list with her 108th and final match played; she tallied a team-high nine kills, six digs and two blocks in her last match in the Green and White. Sophomore middle blocker Ellen Hawks (Austin, Texas) had eight kills and four blocks while junior libero Monique Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the defense with 18 digs.
Reigning A-Sun Player of the Week Carolyn Jenkins paced North Florida to the victory with 12 kills and six blocks while Casey Giovanazzi handed out 33 assists with six digs. Defensively for the Ospreys, Nicole Baran and Kelsey Smith each reached double figures with 20 and 12 digs, respectively.
The Hatters are slated to return their entire roster minus only Ream for the second season of the Tim Loesch Era in 2012; Stetson's nine wins in 2011 marked one more than in its 2008-10 campaigns combined.
