DeLand, Fla. - Stetson junior guard Shanasa Sanders (Jacksonville, Fla.) was named Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Basketball Newcomer of the Week on Monday after averaging 20.5 points per game on 48.5 percent shooting in Stetson's two contests over the past seven days. Her first career award comes on the heels of last week's A-Sun Player of the Week honor given to fellow junior guard Victoria McGowan (Inkster, Mich.).
In Friday afternoon's 71-62 win over Miami (Ohio), Sanders scored 17 points and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds, following that performance up with a career-high 24 points at Big East foe USF on Monday evening, leading all scorers in a 77-62 defeat for the Hatters. Overall, the University of Cincinnati transfer and Sport Management major averaged 20.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game against the RedHawks and Bulls, making 15 of 31 field goal attempts (.484), six of nine three-point attempts (.667) and five of six free throw attempts (.833).
As a result of her 24 points at USF on Monday, Sanders took over the Stetson scoring lead at 15.1 points per game; she also averages 4.3 rebounds per game with 12 assists and 11 steals.
The Hatters, now 5-2 on the season, open Atlantic Sun Conference play at 11:00 am Thursday, December 1 at the Edmunds Center against ETSU. The early start time will accommodate Volusia County Schoolchildren Day; Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at GoHatters.com.
