DeLand, Fla. - For the second time this season, Stetson junior guards Victoria McGowan (Inkster, Mich.) and Shanasa Sanders (Jacksonville, Fla.) have swept the Atlantic Sun Conference women's basketball weekly honors. McGowan earned her fourth A-Sun Player of the Week award of the season while Sanders was named A-Sun Newcomer of the Week for the third time in 2011-12.
The backcourt duo were the driving forces in a 3-0 week for the Hatters (15-3, 6-0 Atlantic Sun) that saw the team set program records for winning streak (nine games through Monday) and best start in A-Sun play at 6-0. Stetson won 89-84 at Mercer last Wednesday, then returned home to defeat Jacksonville 93-86 in double overtime Saturday and North Florida 63-55 on Monday.
McGowan became the first player in the nation to record two triple-doubles in a season when she put up a career-high 29 points with 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the Mercer win; she had earlier recorded 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists at Ball State on December 4. Back home in the Edmunds Center, she just missed yet another triple-double with 24 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists against JU before pacing the Hatters past the Ospreys with 17 points, seven rebounds and six steals. McGowan, who leads the A-Sun in scoring, assists, free throw percentage and steals, averaged 23.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 5.0 steals per game with perfect 16-16 free throw shooting over the last seven days for Stetson.
Sanders not only had a big week scoring the ball (15.3 ppg in a 3-0 week for Stetson), but also crashed the boards as never before. Her hugest game was in a 22-point, 14-rebound double-double in the 2OT win over Jacksonville - the first double-double of her career and a career high in rebounding. Sanders also notched 14 points and six rebounds in the win at Mercer as well as 10 points and six boards in Monday's win over UNF. Sanders shot nearly 43 percent from the floor on the week and dished out three assists each against the River City duo in the Edmunds Center.
McGowan and Sanders had swept the A-Sun honors together on December 13; McGowan's other Player of the Week nods came November 22 and December 6 while Sanders also picked up Newcomer of the Week laurels on November 29.
