Stetson University sophomore Chris Perez, on the heels of helping the Hatters break out of a five-game losing streak, was named Newcomer of the Week by the Atlantic Sun Conference on Tuesday.

Perez, a native of Santiago, Dominican Republic, scored a game-high 22 points on Monday night while also grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out four assists, to help the Hatters take a 75-59 victory over Kennesaw State.

The win moved Stetson into a tie for seventh place in the league race with seven games left on the regular season schedule.

Perez, who played at Oldsmar Christian Academy in Clearwater before originally signing with Liberty, is second on the Stetson team, behind his high school teammate Adam Pegg, with a 13.6 points per game average this year. He has scored in double-figures in 19 of 22 games, including 46 points in two games against Kennesaw State.

The Newcomer of the Week award is the first of the season for Perez, and the second of the year for the Hatters. Pegg took the same honor on Nov. 15 for the first week of the season.

The Hatters will return to action on Saturday evening at North Florida. That game is set for a 7 p.m. start.
