Brian Young was hired at Stetson by Head Coach Roger Hughes in January 2012.

Young comes to Stetson from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., where he served as defensive backs coach for the last two seasons. He will serve in the role of pass defense coordinator for the Hatters.

"Brian brings a wealth of knowledge of defense and has a reputation as an outstanding recruiter, especially in the southeast," Hughes said. "He was most recently at Cornell, so he understands the kind of student-athletes we are looking for - kids who can excel both athletically and in the class room. He is very highly regarded among his peers and I am excited to have him on my staff here at Stetson."

Young is a native of Savannah, Ga., and a product of Georgia Southern University where he played defensive back and earned a B.A. in Parks and Recreation Administration in 1997. He expects to complete requirements for his Master's Degree in Kinesiology from Georgia Southern this spring.

"I am highly excited about being here at Stetson and helping to establish the football program from the ground level," Young said. "I think that Coach Hughes is a great coach and a great person to have to start a new program, and I am excited about helping to get Stetson off the ground."

Young has a long and distinguished career as a football coach at multiple levels. He has coached professional players for several arena teams and also worked with the Buffalo Bills as a training camp assistant. He also had a successful tenure as a high school football and basketball coach.

Since 2005 he has primarily focused on coaching in the collegiate ranks. He spent five seasons on the coaching staff at Mississippi College, starting as secondary coach and special teams coordinator before adding the titles of recruiting coordinator and, finally, defensive coordinator.

During his tenure at Mississippi College, which plays in NCAA Division III, he helped develop a pair of All-Conference defensive backs and also helped guide the team to a conference title.

He moved on to Cornell in 2010, helping the Big Red rank second in the Ivy League in pass defense that year and developing a pair of second team All-Conference performers over two seasons.

"We want to have some athletes who can run around back there," Young said of his defensive philosophy. "We won't be shy about playing man coverage, but will also play some zone. We want guys who are very athletic, and we'll fit what we try to do to their talents and abilities."

The Ivy League, like the Pioneer League which will be the Hatters' football home, plays at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level, and also plays without athletic scholarships. Recruiting the type of student-athletes Stetson will be looking for is nothing new for Young.

"We are looking to recruit character first," Young said. "We want good athletes with a strong academic background. I have been fortunate throughout my career to work primarily at private schools with strong academics and I think we have a very strong product to sell those kinds of students here at Stetson."

Prior to his coaching career, Young spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons playing in arena football, first for the Bismarck (N.D.) Blaze and then for the Duluth (Minn.) Lumberjacks.

His coaching career started with the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League and includes a tenure as a high school basketball coach where he led Savannah High School to a 32-2 record and a state runner-up finish.
