Johnson City, Tenn. - The fourth-seeded Stetson women's tennis team (14-6) posted the doubles point and three singles wins in the first three matches to claim a 4-0 win over fifth-seeded Kennesaw State (14-8) in Friday's Atlantic Sun Conference quarterfinals at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center. The win advances the Hatters to face top-seeded North Florida in tomorrow's semifinals; Stetson has now reached the A-Sun semifinals in eight consecutive seasons.
Stetson powered to the doubles point to begin the match as sophomore Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) and senior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) earned a decisive 8-1 win over Jana Hueckinghaus and Tamara Plocher on Court 3; their efforts were soon matched by sophomore Diana Bukajeva (Riga, Latvia) and junior Jen Miller (Tampa, Fla.), who beat Therese Lagerkvist and Vera Shkundina 8-5 on Court 2. The remaining match was left unfinished to move on to the singles proceedings.
Bukajeva and Cable came out firing in singles to put Stetson ahead 3-0 and within one point of victory. The former beat Hueckinghaus 6-2, 6-1 on Court 4 while the latter nearly shut out Lagerkvist 6-1, 6-0 on Court 5. The Hatters and Owls could have been poised for a marathon match with closely contested affairs on Courts 2, 3 and 6, but junior Sara Lazarevic (Calgary, Alta.) made sure Stetson would be getting all the rest it could, fending off Shkundina 6-4, 6-1 at #1 singles to end the match at 4-0 in favor of the Hatters. The other three matches were left unfinished under postseason "drop-dead" rules.
The Hatters are slated to take on the A-Sun regular season champion UNF Ospreys at 1:30 pm tomorrow, although with the Stetson-UNF and ETSU-USC Upstate men's semifinal matches preceding it, a delay in the start time is likely. Live Scoring is available at GoHatters.com.
