Stetson men's soccer senior Jonathan Mendoza (Altamonte Springs, Fla.)
has recently continued his success on the pitch, leading Orlando City U23 with
four goals this summer.
Mendoza, last season's Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the
Year and NSCAA Third Team All-America, scored again on Tuesday night in a 2-1
victory over last season's Southeast Division Champion of the USL's Premier
Development League, Mississippi Brilla.
The Stetson senior scored in the 26th minute to
tie the contest at 1-1. Mendoza
received a leading pass from teammate Johan Bergfeld and finished off the play
firing a shot past Mississippi
goalkeeper Davis Griffin. Orlando went on to win
the match 2-1, improving to 6-2-4 on the season.
Orlando
City currently stands in
third place with 22 points, but has played one less game than the Ocala
Stampede and the IMG Bradenton Academics, which are in first and second,
respectively.
Mendoza's squad has four
games remaining in the regular season, one of which is against Bradenton.
Orlando City
will return to the pitch tomorrow night, Friday, July 6, when the team heads to
Panama City Beach to take on the fourth place
Pirates at 8:00 p.m.
"The summer has been great," Mendoza said.
"There have been some ups and downs, but every season is going to have
those. I'm very excited about the
upcoming fall at Stetson though. I'm
ready to give it everything I have for this team in my final year with the
Hatters."
The Stetson men's soccer team will be looking to make it
back to the A-Sun Championship this fall after falling in the semis a year
ago. The Hatters last won the league
title in 2009 with a 2-1 victory over Mercer.
