Coming off of its first victory of the season - a 2-1
overtime win over Embry-Riddle on August 25 - the Stetson women's soccer team
will head back on the road for a pair of matches in the Trojan Classic this
weekend. The Hatters will play Jacksonville State
on Friday at 1:00 p.m., and then take on host Troy at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
After a season-opening 2-0 loss to Middle Tennessee, Jacksonville State (3-1-0) has been on a roll,
winning three straight road contests.
The Gamecocks topped Georgia State 2-1, Jackson
State 2-0, and Alabama
A&M by a score of 5-0. Sophomore
Courtney Hurt leads Jacksonville
State with three goals
and one assist on the year. The forward
scored in each of the Gamecocks' three wins.
Troy
comes in as hosts of the Trojan Classic with a record of 3-2-0. The Trojans won their first two tilts at home
against Alabama State
and on the road at Alcorn
State, before falling to
Ole Miss 5-0. Troy recently defeated Wofford 1-0 and
dropped a 1-0 contest at Furman. Junior
Cecilia Thorngren leads the Trojans offensively in the early going, tallying
three goals and four assists in the first five games of play.
Junior forward Alyssa Welsh scored both of Stetson's goals
in a 2-1 overtime victory over Embry-Riddle last weekend. Welsh opened the scoring with a header goal
in the 62nd minute to give the Hatters a 1-0 lead. After a tying goal from the Eagles sent the
game to overtime, another header by Welsh, just under four minutes into extra
time, gave Stetson its first win of the season.
It marked the third straight season that Welsh has recorded a multiple
goal game for the Hatters.
