Four Hatters advanced to the semifinals in their respective brackets after the
first day of match play at the College
of Charleston Invitational
on Friday. Three other Hatters had victories.
Diana Bukajeva started her day by defeating Irena Vlana
(College of Charleston) 6-4, 6-1. She advanced to the semifinals of the A2
singles draw by defeating Clara Perez (Armstrong) 6-2, 6-2 in round two.
Clark Tatje won both of her matches as well in the A2
singles draw, defeating Libby Scott (Coastal) 6-0, 3-6, 10-7 and Kelly
Kambourelis 3-6, 6-4, 10-6. Tatje and Bukajeva are playing Saturday with the
chance to face each other in the A2 singles championship.
Jen Miller had a first-round bye in the B2 singles draw, and
then went on to win her match against Sarah Gail Neibur (Samford) 6-0, 6-3 to
advance to the semifinals.
MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell was the other Hatter who
advanced to the semifinals, winning her only match of the day against Courtney
McCray (Davidson) 6-4, 6-3 in the B2 singles draw.
In the A1 singles draw, Sara Lazarevic lost her first match
to Marlen Hacke (Armstrong) 7-5, 6-1. She bounced back to win her second match
of the day over Natsuko Takayanagl (Charlotte) 6-3, 6-4. Andrea Crespo followed
suit in the A1 singles draw, losing her first match and winning her second; she
fell to Sam Maddox (College of Charleston) 6-1, 6-3 and defeated Jessica
Northcutt (Samford) 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
In the A2 singles draw, Lindsey Cable lost her first match
to Olga Kalodzitsa (Armstrong) 6-3, 6-2. She followed the loss with a win in
her second match, defeating Iveta Guneva (Charlotte) 6-1, 6-1.
Eviline Lepinay opened her day in the B1 singles draw by
defeating Blake Nickles (Davidson) 6-1, 6-3. Lepinay was defeated in the second
match by Jenny Falcone (College of Charleston), losing 6-4, 6-3.
Day two will include more singles matches as well as the beginning
of play from the doubles draws.
