The Stetson women's
soccer team returns to the road this weekend, opening up Atlantic Sun Conference
play at ETSU and USC Upstate. The
Hatters will challenge the Bucs on Friday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. and cap
off the trip with a tilt against the Spartans on Sunday, September 23 at 1:00
p.m.
ETSU welcomes Stetson to
town sitting at the top of the A-Sun standings. The Buccaneers hold a record of
6-2-0 after winning their first four matches to start the season. ETSU has recently lost two of its last four tilts,
including last Friday's road loss at Longwood.
The Bucs are led offensively by Ramey Kerns, who is near the top of the
national ranks with nine goals so far this season. Sarah Zadrazil has added a trio of goals and
seven assists to help the ETSU attack.
USC Upstate will host
FGCU on Friday before playing host to the Hatters on Sunday. The Spartans are currently 2-7-0, losing
seven straight matches in between a season-opening win at VMI and a recent
double overtime victory over Presbyterian.
Upstate has yet to score more than one goal in a single game, and has
been shut out on five occasions in 2012.
Michelle Calmeyn leads the Spartans with one goal and one assist on the
season.
Stetson has had very
different outcomes against this weekend's opponents in the past. The Hatters trail ETSU by a mark of 2-6-0 in
the all-time series, dating back to a 2-1 loss in Johnson City back in
2005. Last season Stetson fell short by
a score of 6-3 at home. SU has fared
much better against USC Upstate, holding a 4-0-1 record in the series since
beginning with 4-0 win at home in 2007.
Last year the Hatters won 6-3 against the Spartans in DeLand.
The Hatters dropped a
pair of games this past weekend, falling to UAB at home and dropping a road
contest at Furman. Stetson went into
halftime tied with the Blazers on Friday, but an early second half score put
Stetson away. Freshman Franziska Wendel
scored her first career goal on a penalty kick in the loss. SU fell behind early at now 7-1-0 Furman on
Sunday, falling by a score of 4-1.
Junior Alyssa Welsh tallied her team-leading third goal of the season in
the defeat.
