The Stetson University women’s golf team has modest goals as the Hatters head into their second event of the fall schedule this weekend.

Stetson will compete in the Eat A Peach Collegiate at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Jekyll Island, Ga. The event is being hosted by Mercer University and is being played on the same course that will host the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship Tournament.

The Pine Lakes Course was originally built in 1968 and was completely renovated in 2002. The tournament will feature three days of 18-hole play. Saturday’s opening round will start at 8:30 am. From the ladies gold tees, the course normally plays at 5,810 yards to a par of 72.

The Hatters are simply looking for improvement over their 10th place finish at the season-opening GolfWeek Program Challenge. The key to making strides will be in eliminating the two or three holes that turn a potential good round into something less.

“We need to stay away from the doubles and triples that really hurt us last week,” Hatters coach Floyd Kerr said. “It seemed as if every one of our girls had one really bad hole that hurt their final scores.”

Combined, the Hatters had 23 double bogeys in the Program Challenge over three rounds. Add to that a pair of triples, a quad and one nine on a par four, and the 10th place finish is easy to understand.

Each of the four juniors seemed to have had specific trouble with one hole. Sammi Smith was four over on the par five 10th hole, Ryan Ashburn struggled on No. 8, another par five, finishing five over there. Jenna Hoecker struggled on the opening par four, finishing six over par on No. 1, while Claudia Redinger had issues with the same hole, finishing seven over.

Mallory Viera had her struggled with the par four 13th hole, finishing that hole at eight over par.

Combined, the Hatters were 30 shots over par on the holes they really struggled with. Shaving off just 15 of those shots would have moved Stetson into the top have of the tournament.

In addition to the host team, and defending tournament champions, from Mercer, the field this weekend will include teams from North Florida and Charleston Southern, among others.
