Former PGA golfer Larry Watson has joined the Stetson University Athletics staff as Director of Golf Operations and Assistant Head Coach of the men's golf team.
Watson brings more than 40 years of golf experience to the program along with a passion for player development.
In his role as Director of Golf Operations, Watson will oversee the operation of Stetson five major fund-raising tournaments throughout the year. He will also work this year along side long-time head men’s golf coach Bob Weickel, who is retiring after more than 50 years at Stetson following this season.
Born and raised in Memphis, Tenn., Watson played baseball at Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tenn., before going on to play for Memphis State, now known as the University of Memphis. After college, his athletic interests turned to golf.
He joined the PGA of America in 1969 and began his career in golf serving as a teaching professional for some of the most exclusive golf clubs in Memphis. He became a Class A member in 1974 and became a touring pro, competing on the PGA Tour, in Europe and as an associate member of the Champions Tour.
Watson is well known for his long career with the Acushnet Company, where he served as the Player Relations Executive for Titleist and Scotty Cameron Putters. He became well known for his caring and charismatic presence on the pro tours and eventually became an instructor to many PGA Tour players.
While working with some the most talented student players in the Central Florida area, Watson has developed a strong network among high school and college coaches.
Watson and his wife, Barbara, reside in DeLand.
