ORLANDO, Fla. - Junior
goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl broke Stetson's all-time record for shutouts in a
career with his 12th in less than three season with the Hatters on
Wednesday night. Schnabl led the Stetson
men's soccer team (2-5-1) to a 0-0 double overtime draw with UCF (4-4-3) in
His second shutout of the season, Schnabl only had to make
two saves to keep the clean sheet against the Knights. With the shutout he passed Ed Funcheon, who
recorded 11 saves for Stetson from 1985 to 1988.
One of the Hatters' best opportunities in the first half
came with around three and a half minutes remaining in the period. Senior Kai Eckenrode played a ball down the
right side to a sprinting Jonathan Mendoza.
The senior midfielder took one touch towards the middle of the field and
struck a ball just wide left of the far post.
Both UCF and Stetson tallied four shots in the first frame,
but neither team was able to put an attempt on target. The Knights and the Hatters each recorded two
corner kicks during the first half, while the former committed three fouls and
the latter finished with four in the evenly played opening period.
The Hatters came out aggressively in the second half,
putting together a quality chance within the first minute of play. Mendoza played a long cross into the box,
finding senior Caleb Matthews, who volleyed the pass towards goal. Unfortunately the shot went just wide right.
With just under 18 minutes remaining in regulation, Schnabl
had to make a difficult play to keep the Hatters in the game as Deshorn Brown
received a pretty pass into the box.
Schnabl charged the UCF forward, deflecting one attempt and then forcing
a second wide of the net.
Neither team was able to get on the board in regulation, as
Stetson and UCF went into extra time tied 0-0.
The Knights tallied 11 shots in the second half, but like the Hatters,
were only able to put one on target.
With 45 seconds remaining in the entire game, Schnabl came
up big once again stopping a shot from point blank range by UCF's Jimmy
Stetson will next host USC Upstate on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in
