Daytona Beach – The Stetson University women’s golf team was unable to maintain the momentum built during Saturday’s second round and slipped to seventh on the final day of the LPGA Xavier Invitational.

The Hatters (320-311-315=946) posted a final round score of 315 on Sunday and finished tied with McNeese State (318-314-314=946) in the 14-team tournament at LPGA International. Stetson’s three-round score was one behind North Florida (317-316-312=945) and Daytona State (316-321-308=945), which tied for fifth.

Old Dominion (312-308-304=924) turned in the best team round of the tournament on Sunday, a 304, to move past Florida Gulf Coast (310-308-312=930) for the team title. The Eagles held a two shot lead after the first two days of play, but closed with a 312 to finish second, six shots behind the Monarchs.

Mercer (312-316-311=939) finished third, just ahead of the host team from Xavier (311-325-307=943).

Individually, Mercer’s Lacey Fears (73-75-76=224) held off Samantha Morrell of Old Dominion, who posted three consecutive scores of 75 to finish one shot off the tournament lead.

For the second straight day, not a single player in the field managed to shoot as low as even par. Xavier’s Shane Crutchfield, who finished fourth overall, was the only player in the tournament to shoot an even par round, finishing Friday’s first round with a 72 before closing with rounds of 82 and 73. Her overall 227 was three shots off the lead and one behind Lina Lagergren of McNeese State (75-77-74=226).

Three of Stetson’s five juniors finished the tournament within one shot of each other. None of them fared better than Claudia Redinger’s 78 on Sunday. Sammi Smith (76-80-79=235) was the top finisher for the Hatters, posting a 79 on Sunday to finish tied for 17th with an overall score of 235.

Ryan Ashburn (78-78-80=236) and Mallory Viera (82-75-79=236) finished one shot back, tied for 19th. Jenna Hoecker (87-78-79=244) finished tied for 35th while Redinger (84-86-78=248) tied for 44th.

The Hatters will close out the fall portion of their schedule in two weeks when they host the Hatter Classic at Victoria Hills Golf Club on November 5-6.
