men's basketball team was selected to finish sixth in the annual Atlantic Sun
Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league on
Thursday. The Hatters were also picked
sixth in the media poll, and senior Adam Pegg was named a member of the
Preseason All-Conference Team.
"Even with Belmont's departure I believe our league will be
as strong as ever," Head Coach Casey Alexander said. "Many of us return a high percentage of
players from last year and there are several programs that have a legitimate
right to believe they will finish at the top.
We have a lot to prove before we can put ourselves in that group, but I
do believe we're headed in that direction."
The Hatters, who return all five starters and over 90
percent of their point production from a year ago, received 48 points in the
coaches' poll, finishing ahead of Jacksonville (7th), Lipscomb (8th),
Kennesaw State (9th), and newcomer to the A-Sun Northern Kentucky
Stetson placed ahead of those same four teams in the media
poll, receiving 113 total points. Last
Tournament champion Mercer Bears were picked at the top of both polls,
receiving six out of 10 first place votes from the coaches and 18 out of 27
from the media.
"Our goal is to play more consistently throughout conference
play this season," Alexander continued. "I
hope we'll see a shift in the standings if we're able to accomplish that."
A second team all-conference selection from a year ago, Pegg
was one of 10 student-athletes to be named to the A-Sun's Preseason
All-Conference Team. In 2011-12 the
Stetson center led the Hatters with 14.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
"Adam really performed well in conference play last year and
deserved the postseason recognition, so I'm not surprised he was picked to the
preseason team," Alexander said. "Without
question his success will impact our success, so my hope is that he continues
to elevate his own and our team's play."
Stetson will host Flagler in an exhibition contest at the
Edmunds Center on Monday, October 29 at 7:00 p.m. before beginning the regular
season at Miami on Friday, November 9.
The 5:30 p.m. contest against the Hurricanes is set to be aired on
