Kiawah Island, SC – Stetson University freshman Dustin Dingus posted his first collegiate round of better than 70 and was rewarded for his efforts by taking the outright individual lead at the Wendy’s Kiawah Classic.

The Palm Harbor, Fla., native shot a two-under par 69 on Monday take move past first round leader Caleb Sturgeon of South Carolina on the Jack Nicklaus designed Turtle Point Golf Course. Sturgeon followed his opening round score of 68 with a three-over par 74 on Monday and is in a three-way tie for second, one shot behind Dingus.

Zach Munroe of the College of Charleston (71-71=142) and Matthew NeSmith of South Carolina (69-73=142) are also one shot behind Dingus going into Tuesday’s final round of play.

A total of 19 players are within five shots of the individual lead.

The Hatters moved up one spot, to 10th, on the team leaderboard. Led by Dingus, Stetson (605) turned in a 305 on Monday and stands 30 shots behind tournament leading South Carolina (282-293=575). The College of Charleston (290-292=582), Wisconsin (296-291=587) and Winthrop (289-300=589) are the teams within the best striking range of the Gamecocks going into the final round of play.

Dingus had the round of the day, playing both the front and back nine with two birdies and one bogey. His round started strong with consecutive birdies on the first two holes. He also posted birdies on holes 13 and 16. His bogeys came on a pair of par 4s, number 5 and number 12.

Behind Dingus, the Hatters didn’t have as much luck on a windy day. Freshman Andrew Peterson (Andover, Minn.) and sophomore Matt Taylor (Naples, Fla.) both posted seven-over par 78s on Monday. Freshman Brian Kehoe (Katonah, NY) made a five shot improvement in the second round and posted an 80. Junior Tyler White (Palm Harbor, Fla.) struggled to a 13-over par 84.
